From a construction standpoint, the AKU Pro is a standout product. It’s made entirely from precisely-machined aluminum alloys and durable, non-slip silicone. The IPX 6 water resistance rating means it’s capable of withstanding powerful jets of hot water from any direction, and when we put that claim to the test, the scale absolutely delivered, continuing weighing functions even as we brewed hot espresso directly onto the weighing platform.

The AKU Pro has all the features you’d come to expect from a professional-grade coffee and espresso scale: auto tare, auto time, first-drip recognition, and Bluetooth compatibility with third-party brew apps. But the AKU Pro has a couple extra tricks up its sleeve: dedicated espresso and pour-over brewing modes. In espresso brewing mode (AKU Spro), you input your espresso dose and the scale auto tares and times your extraction, giving you real-time brew ratios as your extraction progresses. In pour-over brewing mode (AKU Flow), you manually confirm coffee doses and vessel weights and the scale automatically begins timing when you start pouring, again providing live brew ratios as you pour.

All of these features and functions are displayed clearly on the full-color, high-contrast screen, which makes reading times, flow rates, and weights easy and intuitive.

The AKU Pro has non-slip silicone feet and comes with a silicone weighing pad for secure, worry-free brewing. And, keeping in line with Varia’s ethos of extreme variability, it’s simultaneously large enough to use as a pour-over scale and small enough to fit under a portafilter spout.
